Raised in Harvey, IL. Doris (Landers) grew up in a loving home. As she will tell you she
had a typical childhood. But growing up in the shadow of the great depression and then WWII
makes one appreciate all that much more the little things the rest of us seem to take for
granted. Doris grew up in a time when the things that are so common place to us now were in
reality science fiction to them. Telephones not cell phones were party lines that were shared.
Televisions and VCRs were unheard of. Big screen entertainment was in the form of getting out
of the house and going to the movies. Radio was the only in home luxury that was affordable.
As with any generation her dreams and visions were based upon the reality of the times. Most
women did not have the career choices women have today. So when she was 15 after school she
worked at the local five & dime store in Harvey until 5:30 p.m. The twenty-four hour
“Big Box Stores” were not yet a reality. She would then go and work at the movie theater until
10:30 p.m. After that she would sometimes catch the train to Riverdale to go do one of her favorite
pastimes, roller skating at Art’s Roller Rink. Often times returning home after 12:00 a.m. something
a young girl now days would dare not do. But these were different times then.
One of her other favorite pastimes was singing. She always sang in the church choir and at school.
Often times she was asked to perform solo’s at school plays and functions. Her passion for singing
led her to the radio on WJOB in Hammond Ind. She was good enough that she was asked to sing sometimes
on the Happy Hour Variety show, which was broadcast Saturday mornings.
But in 1949 like most women of her era she opted to marry and start a family. After 34 years of raising
children at the age of 52 she decided to go back to school and get her CNA certificate and start a string
of careers that lasted the next 20 years. But that is another story. At the age of 77 Doris published her
first book “God’s Wonderful Gift”. Which still proves you are “NEVER” to “OLD” to follow your dreams.
